What does it mean to you to be vegan?

For us, the meaning is multiple. Care and compassion for all sentient beings. Distress about the society’s environmental predicament. Spiritual and physiological health. Inventive and wonderful and nurturing food. And truth-telling, fierce independence, a willingness to be alienated because of unpopular beliefs, and a desire to be optimal in all things.

What does it mean to you to be urban?

For us, the meaning is intertwined with our understanding of veganism. In our lens, urbanism is about electing to reside within the energy of a city, the overflowing of creativity, questioning convention, stepping beyond boundaries. And very much about the confluence of art, music, culture and cuisine within a chosen community.

What is Urban Vegan NYC?

Our undertaking comprises two restaurants: Urban Vegan Kitchen in Chelsea and Urban Vegan Roots in Astoria and -- more importantly -- a mission to lovingly and steadfastly promote and support veganism.

PROJECT

We’re glad to invite vegan artists to join our journey. To help us embed the Urban Vegan concept into public consciousness, we’re seeking artistic designs to accompany the phrase and to adorn the walls of our restaurants and our merchandise.

Other than making use of the phrase “urban vegan,” there are no rules. We ask that you translate your authentic connection to the phrase into the design.

PROCESS

We have extended the deadline for submissions to Janaury 7!

Please submit photos of your designs to urbanvegankitchen@gmail.com. Applicants may submit as many entries as they wish. Urban Vegan NYC leaders will select finalists who will be notified via email. Finalists will be invited to take part in an event at Urban Vegan Roots at which a jury will select winners and artwork of finalists will be exhibited.

PRIZE

Winners will receive $300 gift cards to Urban Vegan NYC restaurants and their signed work will be featured at one of the restaurants.
